Battery energy storage – High-yield and IAB-compatible to reduce your tax burden

Battery storage as an investment: Make tax-efficient choices and reap long-term benefits

Michael Rehberger5 minute read

In times of volatile energy markets, rising electricity prices and increasing tax burdens, many people are looking for a way not only to safeguard their capital but also to grow it in a targeted manner. This is precisely where the concept of battery storage investment comes in: a modern and highly tax-efficient solution for anyone seeking not just short-term returns but long-term wealth accumulation – whilst actively contributing to the energy transition.

A new opportunity: Direct involvement in the energy transition

For a long time, battery energy storage systems were the exclusive preserve of institutional investors. But that is currently changing. Private investors have recently been able to invest directly in this strategically important infrastructure. Unlike with traditional funds, you become a genuine owner – with personal ownership of battery units and inverters. This direct link to tangible assets not only creates a strong sense of security, but also forms the basis for one of the most attractive tax arrangements that German tax law has to offer.

The tax incentive: making use of the investment allowance (IAB)

At the heart of any tax-optimised investment in battery storage is the investment allowance (Section 7g of the Income Tax Act). It allows you to claim up to 50 per cent of the planned amount against tax even before you make the actual investment. With a tax rate of 42 per cent and an investment of €200,000, you’ll save over €42,000 in tax – thanks to the amended tax assessment.

In addition, in the year the asset is brought into service, you can claim a special depreciation allowance of 40 per cent of the residual value – resulting in a further tax saving of around €16,800. In total, this results in a tax benefit of almost €60,000, which significantly reduces the amount of equity you need to invest, or may even mean you do not need to invest any equity at all.

Revenue from electricity trading and grid stabilisation

A battery storage system is not an investment for speculative purposes, but a highly functional, technically mature component of the energy sector. Its returns come from:

  • Arbitrage trading on the spot electricity market: Electricity is bought cheaply and sold at a higher price when needed.
  • Provision of balancing power: Grid operators pay for the mere readiness to stabilise the electricity grid.
  • Stabilisation of the electricity grid: Storing surplus energy that would otherwise have to be sold or given away when the electricity grid is overloaded.
  • Multi-market strategies: By participating in several markets at the same time, it is possible to further increase returns.

These sources of income can be planned for, regardless of the weather or time of day, and offer a rare combination of stability and flexibility.

Who stands to benefit most from investing in a battery storage system?

This type of investment is aimed at people who take responsibility for their own assets – and who are, at the same time, prepared to make smart use of tax allowances:

  • High earners with a high tax burden can achieve significant tax savings through the IAB and special depreciation allowances.
  • Self-employed people and freelancers benefit from tax relief in particularly profitable years.
  • Heirs and those to whom assets are transferred take advantage of the opportunity to pass on business assets across generations in a tax-efficient manner.
  • recipients of severance pay High one-off payments can be significantly alleviated through the retrospective use of the IAB.
  • Anyone who wants to invest sustainably, will find a high-yield alternative to traditional property or share investments here.

The process: transparent and professional

From the initial consultation through to commissioning, the process is clearly structured:

  1. Discussion of your tax situation and investment objectives
  2. Search for and find suitable projects
  3. Draw up contracts and sort out the financing, if required
  4. Support during project development and implementation
  5. Commissioning and the start of the revenue-generating phase

As an investor, you won’t have to deal with any technical questions or issues. The management is handled professionally and efficiently. At the same time, you remain the owner of your investment at all times – with full control over it.

Invest now – because you’re at a very early stage of this type of investment

Several current developments clearly point to this being a good time to get involved:

  • Increasing volatility in electricity prices The expansion of renewable energy creates ideal conditions for battery-based electricity storage.
  • Decline in conventional power stations increases the demand for balancing energy – battery storage systems are ideally suited to this.
  • Technological advances extend the service life and reduce the running costs of modern storage solutions.
  • Additional remuneration Proposals in the form of capacity markets are already under discussion and could open up further sources of revenue.

The depreciation period for battery storage systems is just 10 years – significantly shorter than for PV systems – which allows for additional tax benefits.

Conclusion – Battery storage systems are an investment in returns, security and the future

Investing in battery storage is more than just a tax-efficient decision. It is a strategic response to the challenges of a changing energy sector – and an effective tool for safeguarding your assets in uncertain times.

You combine immediate tax savings, stable sources of income and a sustainable contribution to the energy transition. And all this with minimal effort, maximum transparency and a high level of security.

Those who act now will not only secure excellent conditions – but will also be ideally positioned for a future in which decentralised energy storage will play a key role.
